With a VFR Over-the-Top Rating, you can fly safely above cloud layers while still operating under visual flight rules. This rating enhances your weather planning capabilities and adds valuable experience toward advanced training.
With a VFR OTT Rating, you can:
- Exercise the privileges of your licence over a cloud ceiling
- (within Transport Canada’s prescribed weather and visibility restrictions)
- Plan more efficient routes by flying above scattered or broken layers
- Gain valuable instrument flight experience toward future advanced ratings
Training Requirements
To obtain a VFR Over-the-Top Rating, you must:
- Hold a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
- Complete a minimum of 15 hours of instrument flight training
