Multi-Engine Rating – Take Your Flying to the Next Level

To fly an aircraft equipped with more than one engine, a pilot must hold a Multi-Engine Rating. This advanced endorsement expands your flying capabilities and is an essential step for those pursuing commercial aviation or seeking to fly higher-performance, multi-engine aircraft.

Prerequisites

Before beginning your Multi-Engine Rating training, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: A high school diploma or equivalent secondary school completion (Millennium Aviation requirement).
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Medical: Hold a valid Category 1 Aviation Medical Certificate.

Course Duration

  • Full-time: Approximately 1 week
  • Part-time: Typically 3–4 weeks, depending on flight scheduling and weather conditions

Training Requirements

To obtain your Multi-Engine Rating, you must:

  • Successfully complete a flight test in a multi-engine aircraft with a Transport Canada-approved Pilot Examiner

While Transport Canada does not specify a minimum number of flight hours for this rating, most pilots require an average of 10 hours of dual flight instruction to prepare effectively for the flight test.
